Gum Treatment (Periodontal Treatment)

FAQs
Is periodontal treatment the same as a deep clean? It is more intense than a deep clean which aims to treat gum disease.
Is it painful? Since root planing and scaling entail removing plaque above and below already sensitive gums, the procedure can cause significant discomfort. Fortunately, your dentist will numb your mouth to keep you relaxed and pain-free throughout the procedure.
How long are appointments? Appointments take a minimum of 30-60 minutes
Are multiple appointments necessary? Usually, patients need to visit more than once.
How long does it take for the symptoms to subside? Bleeding of the gums should start to improve straightaway, as well as bad tastes in the mouth and bad breath. Early to moderate periodontal disease can take about 2-3 weeks to heal. However, healing can only occur with the proper intervention such as scaling and root planing. For severe Periodontal Disease, recovery times vary. For example, with the proper treatment, some patients can recover in 5-8 weeks.
The Periodontal Procedure has two parts: Diagnosis and Treatment.
Diagnosis includes a review of your medical history to identify any factors that could be linked to your symptoms, e.g. smoking or taking certain medicines. An examination is undertaken which includes the measuring of the depth of pockets between your gums and teeth by placing a tiny ruler called a Dental Probe between your teeth and gumline. Dental X-rays are taken to check for bone loss in areas where your dentist observes deeper pockets.
Treatment: We offer non-surgical treatment which includes scaling, root planing & antibiotics.
If you need further surgical treatment, we will refer you to a Specialist Periodontist.
